Johan Rye

Portland, North Dakota

was born in Soholt, Ørskog on August 7, 1875 and came over to America the first time in 1902 to Danley, Minnesota and moved from there to Leonard, North Dakota. He went on a trip to Norway in 1905 and returned in 1906.

His wife, Petra Clausen, is from Aalesund and emigrated here in 1909. They have eight children. Their oldest daughter, Margit Rye, is a very capable Singer.

Rye has lived in Portland, North Dakota since 1907 as a contractor and in the concrete business. The entire portion of Portland’s paving was laid down by Rye.
