His father, Ole Simonsen, and his mother, Marie Amundsen, emigrated from Ringsaker to LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was educated at Galesville College and has worked for and been associated with Mons Andersen of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
His wife, Marie Ericksen, is from Trondhjem. His son, Oscar Simonsen, has taken over the businesses. Alvin Simonsen works in business. One daughter is married in Detroit and one son is an architect in San Francisco, California.
