Old soldiers from the Civil War and veterans of the Indian wars established a post of the Grand Army of the Republic in Cooperstown in the 1880's.

Other veterans in the area included Mathew Davidson, C.C. Platt, Dubois Newell and S.K. Norgard to name a few.

E.C. Butler died in 1929, last of the Civil War veterans in this area.
