Shepard, a railroad siding in Bald Hill Township, was named in 1901 when the station was established and a siding constructed.
It was named for Mr. Finley, Shepard, a secretary to Mr. J. W. Kendrick, general manager of the Northern Pacific at that time in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The name was given by the railroad officials.
