Portland, North Dakota
is a farmer. He was born in Vinje on May 12, 1871. He was the youngest in the family of Aasmund Olavsen Vinje and emigrated to America in 1822 to Fergus Falls, Minnesota and then came to Hillsboro, North Dakota that same year. He purchased Land in Sherbrooke Township, Steele County, North Dakota and has lived there since as a farmer.
His wife, Gina Smette, is from Hallingslaegt. Both she and her mother were born in America. Her father, Halvor Smette, is from Nes in Hallingdal and has a farm near Buxton, North Dakota. They have eight children, four sons and four daughters. All are home on the farm.
