Mrs. Nellie E. barnard Dead

Former Citizen of Griggs County Passes Away at Denver, Colorado

1908

The many old time friends in Cooperstown and Griggs County of Mrs. Nellie E. Barnard, sister of Hon. R. C. Cooper of this city, will regret to hear of her death which occurred at her home in Denver Colorado, Monday night of this week.  Mrs. Barnard has been in poor health for two years and was in the sanitorium until last fall when feeling better she returned to her home.  Four weeks ago she was taken very sick and has gradually failed since that time.  The real cause of her death was tumor of her liver.

Mrs. Barnard received a vey severe shock many years ago while out in a severe blizzard one night, being lost in the storm, and never really recovered from that shock.  She and her husband came to Griggs County in 1881 and were among the first settlers here.

About 1887 they moved to California and Mr. Barnard died at Los Angeles about 14 years ago (1895).  The family then moved to Colorado where they have lived ever since.  Two children survive her, George and Emma.  The deceased was born in 1843 and would have been 65 years old in April of this year.

Mrs. Barnard was a devout Christian woman, devoting the early years of her life to the building up of church work at Cooperstown and helped to build the Congregational church of which she was a member at that time.  She had a large circle of friends and her home was a hospitable one where the friends and neighbors used to gather to enjoy its genial warmth and hospitality.  The old homestead is three miles east of town and is now owned by Mrs. Thea Upton.  In the passing away of this estimable lady the children lose a loving parent, the relatives and nation a splendid specimen of American motherhood.
